A couple of days ago, I received an out of the blue call from John-Son (a huge six-foot-Spartan-like friend who has an even bigger heart to go with) and he talked to me about this project he’s currently involved in, also known as E.P.I.C. for UNITY. To be honest, I have already heard about this Project E.P.I.C. (a sister event) before John-Son came to me. With my handy blog-stalking skills, I have seen the works of some its members like this one and this one.

So anyway, let me fill you in about what the project E.P.I.C. for UNITY is all about. It is run by the GEL (Growing Emerging Leaders) team of young individuals from ages between 18-26 years old. The project’s aim is simple – to serve the Malaysian society/community by helping instill principles and bring back ethics as well as civic consciousness in Malaysian youths today. In January 2010, the group decided to lend a hand to the Orang Asli at Kampung Jawa, Kerling, Kuala Kubu Bahru by maintaing their basic amenities i.e.: paint job for doors and window panels. And from what I’ve heard, it was one heck of a success. :) Oh and btw, E.P.I.C. is also the acronym for extraodinary people impacting community. :) :)

This time around, the GEL team is back with their second community event, the project E.P.I.C for UNITY and it’s gonna be huge! A year-long campaign with its mission to gather ONE MILLION new voters by the end of 2010 will begin on the 3rd and 4th of April. On those days, the GEL team will be setting up booths at several high-traffic shopping malls (TBC soon!) for youths to register as voters.

VRA-Poster

“According to the Election Commission (EC) Deputy Chairman, Wan Ahmad Wan Omar in a report dated in January 2010, 4.39 million or some 28% of Malaysians over the age of 21 have yet to register as a voter. These are alarming statistics which we believe we have to do something about. To put things into perspective, the state of Selangor itself has an estimated 787,000 unregistered voters.”

Now, here’s where I must admit that I am one of the 28% who have yet to register to become a legitimate voter eventhough I’ve turned 21 two years ago. =\ All these years, I’ve only been complaining about the road system, how inflation on certain products are carried out so haphazardly, how horrid the local eduaction system has become etc.. when I could have actually voiced out my thoughts by making the decision to vote. Sure, one vote won’t count as much if I were to compare it to the other millions, but this is where most of us are wrong. And I agree with John-Son and the rest of the GEL team that if we want to see positive changes in our country, it is time for us to unite and voice out our choices the right way.

P/s: To all the other fellow bloggers out there, I’m sure you and I understand the power of our e-writing these days. With that, I urge you to help spread the word about E.P.I.C. and their upcoming event through your webpages. This is, afterall for us at the end of the day and the team and I would really appreciate your help. :)
